Learn More — What counts as Assessable Income?
What to Include (per IRD Sri Lanka)

Assessable Income is the total income received or derived during the Year of Assessment from the following sources, before deducting Personal Relief or Qualifying Payments:

  • Employment Income — Salary, wages, allowances, and cash/non-cash benefits from your employer.
  • Business Income — Profits from any trade, business, profession, or vocation.
  • Investment Income — Interest, dividends, rent, royalties, and similar returns.
  • Other Income — Any other taxable gains or profits not falling under the above.
What to Exclude

Do not include income that is specifically exempt or excluded under the Inland Revenue Act (for example, certain terminal benefits, approved pension income, or exempt investment gains as defined in the Act). Only enter the taxable portion of your total income here.

Reference: IRD Sri Lanka — FAQs (Assessable Income definition); Return of Income – Individual (Part A: Income Liable to Tax).
Learn More — What are Qualifying Payments?
Verified Qualifying Payment (IRD Website)

The IRD website explicitly states that donations made in money to an Approved Charity are deductible from Assessable Income as a Qualifying Payment.

Deduction Cap

The deductible amount is limited to the lowest of the following three values:

  • One-third (1/3) of your Taxable Income (after Personal Relief)
  • Rs. 75,000
  • The actual amount donated
Important Note

The Inland Revenue Act lists other qualifying payments (e.g., contributions for Samurdhi shop establishment, film industry expenditure), but their current-year applicability and caps are not confirmed in the IRD documents available at the time of this update. Only enter amounts you can substantiate as valid Qualifying Payments for the relevant Year of Assessment. If unsure, enter 0 to avoid an inaccurate tax computation.

Reference: IRD Sri Lanka — Approved Charity Publications; Guide to IIT (Annexure 3 – List of Qualifying Payments); Schedule 5 (Qualifying Payments).
Disclaimer: Do not pay or refrain from paying any tax liability to the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) based on the values produced by this calculator. What Each Result Means

Monthly P&I: The fixed payment that repays both principal and interest over the loan term. This is the number lenders quote.

Monthly Tax + Insurance: Annual amounts ÷ 12. These go into an escrow account and are not part of loan repayment.

Total Interest Paid: The sum of all interest payments over the life of the loan. This is the cost of borrowing.

How to read: Focus on "Total Monthly Payment" for your budget. If it feels high, try a larger down payment or a longer term — but remember: a longer term means more total interest.
This calculator assumes a fixed rate for the entire term. Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) will have different payments after the initial fixed period.

Formula Used (Equated Monthly Instalment)
EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ / [ (1+r)ⁿ − 1 ] where: P = Loan Principal r = Annual Rate ÷ 12 n = Tenure in months
What Each Result Means

Monthly EMI: The fixed amount you pay each month. It covers interest first, then principal.

Total Interest: What the loan costs you beyond the principal. This is pure cost.

Processing Fee: A one-time fee charged by the lender at disbursement. It is not included in the EMI — it is paid upfront.

How to read: The EMI is your monthly commitment. The "Total Cost of Loan" (Principal + Interest + Fee) is the true amount you pay. Compare this across lenders — a lower EMI with a longer tenure usually means higher total cost.

Auto / Car Loan Calculator

Calculate the monthly car payment, total interest, sales tax and total upfront cost from the vehicle price, down payment, trade-in, sales tax %, interest rate, and loan term.

What Each Result Means

Amount Financed: The actual loan amount after down payment and trade-in reduce the price.

Monthly Payment: Your fixed car payment.

Total Upfront Cost: Down payment only. (Trade-in reduces the financed amount, not cash upfront.)

How to read: Negotiate the vehicle price first, then discuss financing. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases total interest. Aim for the shortest term you can afford.
Sales tax rules vary by jurisdiction. This calculator applies tax to the full vehicle price. Some regions tax only the difference after trade-in — check your local rules.

Money Market Mode

Interest accrues daily: Daily Rate = Annual Rate ÷ Day Count Basis. Balance grows by this daily rate each day. This matches how fixed deposits and call money accounts work.

What Each Result Means

Future Value: What your money grows to. This is the headline number.

Total Interest: The growth earned by compounding — your money working for you.

EAR (Effective Annual Rate): The true annual return after compounding. A 9% nominal rate compounded monthly has an EAR of 9.38%.

How to read: The "Future Value" is what you end up with. The "Total Contributions" is what you put in. The difference (interest) is the reward for patience. Start early — time is the biggest factor in compounding.

What Each Result Means

Corpus at Retirement: The total pot of money you will have on the day you retire (in future rupees, not today's money).

Monthly Income (Today's Money): What that corpus can pay you each month, expressed in current purchasing power after stripping out inflation.

How to read: If the "Monthly Income" is less than what you need to live on, you need to save more, retire later, or accept more investment risk. The corpus number looks huge because of inflation — the "Today's Money" income is the realistic figure.
This method assumes you spend the entire corpus by life expectancy. Many planners recommend keeping a safety buffer or using a 4% withdrawal rule instead.

What Each Result Means

ROI (%): The total return over the entire holding period, not annualised.

Annualised ROI: The equivalent yearly compound return. This lets you compare investments of different lengths fairly.

Effective Days Used: Shows the day-count convention applied. A/365 means years are 365 days.

How to read: Use "Annualised ROI" to compare. A 30% return over 3 years is only ~9.1% annualised. A 15% return over 1 year beats it. The day count matters for precision — A/365 is the global default.

NPV & IRR Calculator

Calculate the Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR / XIRR), payback period and Profitability Index (PI) of an investment. Choose between annual periods (IRR) and irregular dated cash flows (XIRR).

How to use it: Enter initial investment, discount rate, and choose the cash-flow mode. For annual mode, enter a comma-separated list of yearly cash flows. For dated mode, enter each cash flow with its date. What you get: NPV, IRR/XIRR, payback period, PI and a verdict (Accept / Reject) — useful for capital budgeting and project appraisal.

Calculation Method & How to Read
NPV Formula
NPV = Σ [ CFₜ / (1+r)ᵗ ] − Initial Investment where CFₜ = cash flow in period t, r = discount rate
IRR (Annual Mode)

The discount rate that makes NPV = 0. Solved by iteration. Accept project if IRR > cost of capital.

XIRR (Dated Mode)
XIRR = r such that Σ [ CFᵢ / (1+r)^(daysᵢ / basis) ] = 0 where daysᵢ = days from investment start to cash flow i
What Each Result Means

NPV: The value created in today's money. Positive = wealth-increasing. Negative = wealth-destroying.

IRR / XIRR: The annualised percentage return of the project. Compare to your cost of capital or hurdle rate.

Payback Period: How long until you recover the initial investment (undiscounted).

Profitability Index (PI): PV of inflows ÷ initial investment. PI > 1 means value creation.

How to read: NPV > 0 and IRR > your required return → Accept. NPV < 0 → Reject. PI > 1 → Good. Payback is a liquidity indicator, not a profitability measure — a project can have a long payback but huge NPV.
IRR can be misleading if cash flows change sign more than once (multiple IRRs). NPV is the theoretically superior criterion.
